The history of the Fortuna Gyógyszertár

Operating since 1902

The history of the pharmacy follows Hungarian history’s ups and downs over the past one hundred years. The establishment of the pharmacy named "Fortuna" was authorized by the BM decree No. 101523-1901 in 1902 for Arnold Schubert. The license designated the part of Csengeri street between Jósika and Külső Dob street for the pharmacy, intended to supply approx. 11,000 inhabitants. The winner of the grant was pharmacist Arnold Schubert, the first owner of the pharmacy. The pharmacy was opened on April 2, 1902. Excellent craftsmen were employed during the constructions. The furniture is made of wood and yew roots. The colored frame and opal glass inlays and decorations of the double-winged glass doors of the cupboards are magnificent; the effigies of the healing deities Aesculapius and Hygieia praise Miksa Róth's workshop. They were declared protected in 1990, together with the scaffolding, the pulpit and the ceiling decoration. In the advertisements of the time, one could often come across the products of the Fortuna pharmacy, e.g.: Fortuna cream (1 crown) and the accompanying soap (80 pennies) Fortuna migraine tablets (30 pennies). From 1907 to 1922 László Erényi was the owner of the pharmacy. In 1905, he obtained a pharmacy diploma at the University of Budapest and was an intern at the family-owned Diana pharmacy. During the First World War, he was awarded the Red Cross medal. The pharmacy named Fortuna was managed by Jenő Szűcs in 1910, and Jenő Holczer from 1915 to 1917. In 1918, the pharmacy was owned by the pharmacists Károly Studényi and János Studényi, and then by Dezső Bordách. László Erényi then leased it to Andor A. Kiss. In the newspapers of the time, one often came across advertisements for iron peptone tablets called "Roboferrin C Arsen Erényi" (1.40 crowns with a dropper). In 1922, Gyula Ásmány became the owner of the Fortuna pharmacy until 1923. In 1923, the Minister of People's Welfare signed the transfer of ownership and operating rights of the Fortuna pharmacy from Gyula Ásmány to Bodnár (Braun) Jenő, whose identity is largely unknown. He was the owner of the Fortuna pharmacy until 1941. From the press of the time, it is known that many lawsuits occurred against him. In 1941, Elemér Kocsuba became the owner of the pharmacy. An extremely vibrant individual, he was the son of an old noble apothecary family. His father owned a pharmacy in Veszprém. Following in his father's footsteps, Elemér Kocsuba obtained his diploma in medicine in Budapest, and in 1929 he received his diploma as a church conductor at the Academy of Music, and graduated from the film school of the National Film Association. From then on, he worked partly as an assistant director, partly as a production manager or producer during the production of several Hungarian films. He quickly developed his talent as an athlete (tennis competitor, swimming champion, figure skating champion, car racer) and as an artist (conductor, composer, organist, pianist). In World War II, he was a sergeant. Between the two world wars, he drifted off at a car race, crashed into a tree and was injured. He suffered a skull injury, as a result of which platinum was implanted to replace the damaged bone. Due to the value of the embedded platinum, he could not go abroad after 1945. In 1945, the Fortuna pharmacy came under state management, although Elemér Kocsuba was left in charge until the nationalization in 1950. After 48 years of operation, the Fortuna pharmacy as a private enterprise - like all Hungarian pharmacies - ceased to exist, the owners were not compensated, and the pharmacy even lost its name. Until 1953, it was named no. 0/72, and from then until reprivatization it bore the number 713. However, there was no lack of excellent pharmacists in this era either: Imre Sándor, Aladár Szilassy, Imre Kocsis (Pollák), Emma Fleiner Károlyné Dembitz, Dr. Harza Lászlóné dr. Anna Bene, Gáspárné Menyhárt dr. Szilvia Solymári and many others. From the beginning of the 1990s, the re-privatization of pharmacies became possible in connection with rapid changes internationally. Pharmacy No. 713 in 1996 - having now regained the name "Fortuna" - became the property of Dr László Farkas. Under his leadership, the transformation of the pharmacy took place according to the requirements of modern times. In addition to his pharmaceutical activities, his area of research is also Latin, ancient Greek and Sanskrit literature. After the retirement of László Farkas, came Fortuna Gyógyszertár to its current owner at the beginning of 2023.
